Speakers
Bass reflex is flawed... How are you supposed to reproduce sound accurately with an uncontrolled resonant something anywhere. How is a speaker supposed to create low frequency sound pressure waves when it has a big hole in it?

Non time aligned speakers sound tizzy. How many microphones do you know of which have separate transducers for bass and treble? (OK there are some but they are V. close together). How is a typical flat fronted two way speaker supposed to "REPRODUCE" an event when it rips it to pieces in the time domain? The effect of this is that fizzy tizzy sound, which in association with all the other nasties (like multi-stranded speaker cable and opamps) which can make the mass market Hi Fi ultimately irritating to listen to, especially on highly processed sound like FM radio.

The wonderful Tandy speaker

I read Ken Kesler's review of these little chaps in English Hi Fi Magazine Hi Fi news, and I knew that I wanted a pair. They appealed on several levels. They were cheap, they had non chip-board box and the tweeter looked very interesting. When I listened to them in the shop I knew they must be doing some thing right because I could hear cheap amplifier etc.

The first thing I did when I got home, was to block up the ports (yik) and stuff the boxes with wool. This cleaned up the bass and mid, which was a bit boomy and uncontrolled. When measured in the frequency domain these speakers have a surprisingly flat frequency response. When measured in the time domain these speakers have a surprisingly excellent impulse response!!! It actually looks like the input!!!
As you can see, further tweaks have included adding a phase plug, to help out the mid which seemed a little dull, re wiring, replacing the ferrite core inductor with an air core, and removing the tweeter protective grills. These speakers are not perfect, they do not soak up power or have massive bass, but they are so coherent and transparent, you can hear what else is going on in the system.
