I have always had a curiosity about audio. I
remember as a pre-school child spending many hours in the early 70's playing
with my parents Roberts radio (remember when they were good?). As I got older I
acquired various valve radios and record players, radio grams, tape recorders
etc.
In retrospect these items must have given me a thorough grounding in
simple single ended valve sound, through uncomplicated wide range speakers. As I
got older I scummed to transistorisation and stereo (great excitement) and the
revolutionary move from ceramic to magnetic pickups!!! In my final years of
school I built my first two amplifiers some speakers and a subwoofer. I studied
electronics at university because I was frustrated at not being able to
understand circuits with transistors in. By the time I went to college I had
quite a nice system consisting of a Thorens 151(probably) with a Grado cartridge
(miles better tracking than my previous dual 505) a NAD 30 20 and some home made
speakers and a simple subwoofer that later went in my car (1990). I had several
CD players during this time and eventually gave up records. I hate tracking
distortion. Even though, if I am honest the sound I was getting from vinyl was
probably more satisfying.
