Transistor amp 1
1997

A couple of years later one of my friends came round wanting me to design an amplifier. I thought I can do that, quick and slightly better than really basic ought to do! A little bit of attention to detail here and there to keep it sweet, no problem.

The first time I ran it up it seemed to work well, I tweaked up the bias on the distortion analyser and then gave it a blast. It sounded surprisingly good. I turned the volume down after a bit, and noticed the sound took on a slightly uncomfortable quality. On further investigation I found that I had set an internal gain incorrectly and was running with 0 feedback. Interesting. This was rectified and debugging continued. This amplifier went onto replace the 2 watt SE amplifier that I had been using for the last 4 years. The new amp's sound was a little bit more gritty and less refined than the SE, but not bad, and a lot louder...
